How B2C Innovation uses OpenWeather data to power real-time road safety intelligence for 350,000 connected riders across Europe

About B2C Innovation Challenge and Solution

B2C Innovation is the company behind MOTO.APP, one of Europe's largest motorcycle telematics networks. Since 2016, the platform has recorded more than 300 million real-world trips across a network of over 350,000 IoT devices deployed on motorcycles across Italy and the wider EU. The company's mission is to reduce road accidents and improve rider safety through data-driven intelligence, combining trip analytics, behavioural insights, and real-time environmental data to build smarter, safer roads.

Motorcycle safety is uniquely complex. Unlike car journeys, rider risk changes dramatically with weather conditions: a wet road surface, reduced visibility, or sudden wind gusts can transform a routine route into a hazardous one. B2C Innovation needed a way to incorporate live and historical weather conditions into its road safety model at the scale of hundreds of millions of journeys, across multiple countries, updated continuously, and available in near real-time.

The system needed to be reliable enough to power safety-critical decisions. Every trip in the database needed to be matched with precise weather conditions at the time and place it occurred. And the data infrastructure had to hold up to the demands of 24/7 hourly ingestion, year-round, without fail.

B2C Innovation integrated OpenWeather's Professional plan with Bulk Download, ingesting comprehensive weather data every hour, 365 days a year. The data flows directly into their Azure SQL databases alongside trip records, enriching each journey with:

•       Temperature

•       Humidity

•       Wind speed

•       Atmospheric pressure

•       Prevailing weather conditions

Over time, this has accumulated into a dataset of more than 1.2 billion weather data points, forming the environmental backbone of B2C Innovation's proprietary road safety model.

“The integration was remarkably straightforward. We set up automated hourly bulk downloads and the data flows directly into our data pipeline with minimal overhead. The JSON format is clean, well-structured, and the API documentation has always been clear enough that our team could work with it independently.”

How it works: the road safety model

The OpenWeather data feeds into a proprietary risk model that assigns a safety score to every road segment in Italy. The model is built on three dimensions:

HOW:  Route familiarity - how well does this rider know this road?

WHERE: Road geometry and historical accident statistics

WHEN: Live weather, time of day, visibility — powered by OpenWeather

The same road can carry dramatically different risk levels depending on conditions. OpenWeather's WHEN dimension ensures the model reflects reality, not just historical averages. The correlation between risk scores and actual accident frequency has been validated against real-world data from 2021 to 2023, confirming that roads classified as higher risk do in fact register significantly higher accident rates.

Results in practice

OpenWeather data directly powers three core capabilities within the MOTO.APP platform:

•       Real-time risk scoring for navigation routes, updated as conditions change

•       A gamified safety reward system that incentivises riders who choose safer routes with tangible benefits

•       Continuous enrichment of the historical trip database for ongoing model improvement and validation

“When you're building safety-critical systems that affect real people's driving decisions, you need a data partner you can trust. OpenWeather has been that partner for us.”

Why OpenWeather

B2C Innovation has been an OpenWeather customer for over five years, across multiple contract renewals. Three qualities have defined the relationship:

Reliability. Running hourly downloads 24/7 for years without disruption. For a system where every trip must be matched with weather conditions in near real-time, uptime and data consistency are non-negotiable.

Coverage. MOTO.APP operates across the EU and additional countries. OpenWeather's global dataset means a single integration covers the entire operational footprint.

Integration ease. The JSON format is clean and well-structured, the API documentation is clear and self-sufficient, and the bulk download pipeline required minimal overhead to implement and maintain.

“In the vehicle telematics and connected mobility space, we regularly discuss data providers with industry peers, and we consistently recommend OpenWeather for its combination of reliability, coverage, ease of integration, and value for money.”
