When drought reaches the heath: the Dunwich fire

On Wednesday, a wildfire broke out on Dunwich Heath on the Suffolk coast. By the following morning Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service had declared a major incident, citing the size and complexity of the blaze, an area the service put at roughly 140 football pitches. Homes and around 200 caravans were evacuated overnight.

The Environment Agency has confirmed that half of England, including Suffolk, is now officially in drought. Dry ground, low fuel moisture and a spell of heat turned a protected nature reserve into tinder. The RSPB has warned the heathland could take 25 years to recover.

The problem isn't the spark — it's the conditions before it

Wildfires need three things: fuel, an ignition source and weather that lets fire spread. Land managers can do little about the first two on any given afternoon. The heath is the fuel; the ignition, once conditions are right, can come from almost anything. What changes from one day to the next is the weather and, critically, the state of the landscape that weeks of weather have produced.

That is why fire is better understood as an accumulating risk than a single event. Drought doesn't start a fire, but it decides how readily one catches and how fast it runs. A heath that would shrug off a stray spark in a wet June becomes dangerous after a dry, hot July. The Dunwich fire didn't arrive out of nowhere, the conditions for it had been building for weeks.

Reading fire risk before it ignites

This is the gap the OpenWeather Fire Weather Index is built to close. Rather than reporting that a fire has started, the Fire Weather Index quantifies how dangerous the weather and landscape conditions are for fire, combining the meteorological drivers that govern ignition and spread, including temperature, relative humidity, wind and the dryness accumulated in vegetation and soil over preceding days.

The value is lead time. A sensor tells you what is happening now, a forecast tells you what is coming so you can act before it does. When a Fire Weather Index climbs across a region in the days ahead of an event, that is an actionable signal – hours and days in which fire services can pre-position resources, land managers can raise site restrictions, and operators near vulnerable assets can review their contingency plans. The Dunwich blaze sat close to sensitive infrastructure; the fire service reported no current risk to the nearby Sizewell B power station but stressed the situation was dynamic. In exactly those situations, advance warning of rising fire-weather danger is the difference between reacting and preparing.

Delivered as a forecast index rather than an after-the-fact alert, this kind of intelligence lets responders treat fire risk the way they already treat flooding or storms: as something you can see building on the horizon and plan around, not something that simply happens.

The same drought, a wider bill

Fire is the most visible symptom of this drought, but it is not the only one, and for the UK, agriculture may be where the deeper cost lands. The same soil-moisture deficit that turns a heath to tinder also starves crops and grassland of water at the height of the growing season. A drought declaration across half of England is, in effect, an early-warning notice for farming: cereals under stress as grain fills, grazing land browning and forcing livestock onto winter feed months early, potatoes and field vegetables leaning harder on irrigation exactly when rivers and aquifers are lowest and abstraction comes under pressure. Dry summers in recent years have already shown how quickly a promising harvest can be pared back when the rain stops.

The common thread is that both risks are driven by the same accumulating weather. A heathland fire and a stressed wheat field are two readings on the same instrument: weeks of heat and rainfall deficit written into the ground. That is what makes the drought a whole-landscape problem rather than a single-sector one — and it is why the ability to see the conditions building, ahead of the damage, matters wherever dry weather carries a cost.

A UK problem now, not a future one

The lesson of Dunwich Heath is not that one nature reserve caught fire. It is that the conditions which make wildfire likely — prolonged drought, dried-out vegetation, heat — are now a recurring feature of the English summer, confirmed by a formal drought declaration across half the country. As those conditions become more common, the ability to anticipate fire-weather risk rather than respond to fires already burning becomes part of routine operational planning for fire services, landowners, and anyone managing assets in exposed landscapes.

Fire weather can be forecast. Doing so turns the days before a fire from dead time into decision time.
