Healthy People Healthy Planet project

Extreme weather events increasingly impact cities worldwide, demanding urgent action. Recognizing this, OpenWeather was proud to be a co-organiser organizer of the recent Healthy People, Healthy Planet (HP2) workshop, hosted at Imperial College London at their central London campus. This vital event successfully brought together diverse experts dedicated to tackling urban resilience.

The workshop started with OpenWeather’s Daniil Mintc making the opening speech. It was then followed by the broader HP2 initiative, a collaboration where OpenWeather plays a central role alongside Imperial College London, the University of New York, and government/industry partners. HP2's mission is pioneering data-driven, science-backed solutions to transform urban planning. The goal is to create cities that are resilient, equitable, resource-efficient, and healthier, all while aligning with critical global climate objectives.

Building on our participation as a speaker last year, the depth and urgency of the challenge inspired OpenWeather to step up significantly. This year, we embraced the role of full partner and key organizer, driven by a deep commitment to fostering meaningful change towards sustainable urban futures.

Workshop discussions, encouraged by the organizers, including Daniil Mintc from Open Weather, centered on HP2's core vision: shaping the cities of tomorrow. This included integrating innovative technology, sustainable practices, and inclusive planning. Experts explored collaborative solutions that strategically balance economic growth with environmental resilience and social equity, aiming for thriving urban environments.

The timing for this initiative, strongly championed by OpenWeather and its partners, remains critical. The workshop directly addressed the need to meet international climate commitments like COP goals and the 1.5°C limit. It also aligned clearly with ambitious UK targets, including net-zero by 2050 and significant emission reductions by 2030, alongside vital strategies like green infrastructure and enhanced climate adaptation.

OpenWeather is proud that the HP2 workshop fostered vital collaboration. By focusing diverse expertise on actionable, science-backed solutions, the HP2 initiative contributes significantly to building the sustainable, resilient, and healthy cities needed for the future.

In the spirit of collaboration, we would be interested to hear from anyone with any thoughts, comments or suggestions about the focus of future events, or any interesting and innovative ideas around the areas looked at by HP2. We are also ready to support individuals and groups through our OpenWeather initiative.
